We trace our roots back to 1868. It is remarkable that some challenges of the past, such as protecting communities against water and reinforcing coastlines, are just as relevant today. Together with 4,500 Van Oord professionals, I’m prepared to take on the challenge of climate change. By offering various land reclamation and coastal protection programmes. And by acting as a sparring partner for the authorities in many different countries in their battle against flooding. This way we build a better world for future generations.

21st century icon
The combination of smart engineering and innovative techniques results in sustainable flood protection solutions. It is in that context that we have been awarded the Afsluitdijk project. The Afsluitdijk dam has protected large parts of the Netherlands against flooding from the sea and Lake IJsselmeer since 1932. After more than 85 years, the dam is in need of repair. Thanks to the efforts of the Van Oord consortium, it will soon enter the 21st century as a new icon of Dutch marine engineering.

Energy transition worldwide
Van Oord plays a pivotal role in another enormous challenge that the world is facing: the transition to a sustainable energy system. I believe that offshore wind is the best way to make this transition. Specialists of our Offshore Wind division already operate around the globe. Helping countries and other clients with their climate goals. Like in Taiwan, where we are called in to build the Yunlin offshore wind farm together with our local partners.

Mastering the elements
150 years of Marine ingenuity: that is the milestone that we are celebrating in 2018. As we reflect on our long history in marine engineering, we see how the four elements link our past, our present and our future. With both feet firmly planted on the ground we take on old and new challenges. To keep our planet safe and habitable for the generations that will follow us over the next 150 years.
