Our lives depend heavily on energy. Food, warmth, communication, transport, clothes…everything requires energy. It’s absolutely vital to us, and so is the energy transition. Why? Because the true cost of energy is measured in more than money.

Let’s take a look at a few numbers. Globally, the demand for energy has increased by 35% over the past 15 years and is expected to rise by another 15% in the next decade and a half. Our current energy production and consumption are a major contributing factor to climate change. In other words, the true cost of energy is measured in more than money. It concerns our future. The energy transition aims to transform our present fossil fuel energy system into one based on renewable energy sources. It will shake up the energy mix as we know it.

This issue will tell you more about why and how Van Oord is accelerating the energy transition. In Five questions for Pieter van Oord, our CEO will explain how we are contributing to the global energy transition, in which offshore wind plays a major role. Wind power also features in our story of six fanatic kite-surfers and their challenging trip along 800 kilometres of the Brazilian coastline. Their adventures will certainly boost your energy levels!

In the Netherlands, we are building Fryslân Wind Farm,
a 382 MW nearshore wind farm that will supply enough energy for 500,000 households. But the project is not just delivering renewable energy. It is also engaging with the local community by creating extra jobs and opportunities for new economic activity, inviting financial participation, and involving locals in project development. No wonder the project slogan is ‘Fan en foar Fryslân’ – in other words, by and for the people of the Province of Friesland.

Get in relaxed mode, because we also have some scenic videos in this issue. One covers our coastal reinforcement project in Senegal. Another is about the Dubai Harbour project, involving a new cruise terminal and marina that will welcome tourists to the 2020 World Expo. And if you’re interested in the wildlife of industrial and port areas, then take a look at the making of a nature documentary in the Port of Rotterdam.
