Within Van Oord, our tagline is Marine ingenuity. We create innovative solutions that are valuable to our clients, our partners and other stakeholders. Marine ingenuity means, among others, creative thinking and distinguishing ourselves from others.
Van Oord is a proud sponsor of Battle of the Beach, which won the Water Innovation Award 2016.
Other initiatives, such as PortXL – and the ensuing partnership with Parable – fit right in with our innovative mindset. With the help of virtual reality, this start-up is taking safety training to the next level. Several of those involved share their vision of this extraordinary initiative in outspoken interviews.
Van Oord knows very well that adding value is one of the keys to its long-term success. The past has shown that this added value is the source of the substantial contributions we make to our world. Contributions that ensure sustainable development and growth. This process never ends. We are ready and able to take on future challenges.
For now, I wish you a lot of reading pleasure.
Pieter van Oord
We live in a VUCA world – a world that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. An era in which the constants in our lives are being uprooted and replaced with uncertainty, and in which changes are occurring at a constantly increasing pace. In this complex world, regulations and client requirements are continuously changing. This affects us at Van Oord every day.
In order to cope with these changes, we work continuously to improve and adapt ourselves, and to identify and utilise opportunities. We add value by combining our knowledge and experience with new work methods, specialised equipment and vessels. One demonstration of this can be found in the Walney Extension offshore wind project, which has been realised in the Irish Sea. While the installation vessel Aeolus normally stands on its legs, this project saw it perform floating installation work for the first time. In this edition, you will read about how the Aeolus – with the assistance of all sorts of cutting-edge technology – kept itself in position despite tide currents and varying weather conditions.
Specific examples of recent innovations are the developments in the field of subsea rock installation and KPMG’s True Value methodology that was used to reveal the societal value of the Moín container terminal project in Costa Rica.
You can read more about these topics in this edition of About Marine ingenuity.
