What is digital?

Efficient Solution

Maarten continues: ‘In one of the first tests we ran, Support Centre staff took over the work of preparing the next leg of their voyage from the crew, allowing them to focus on current operations. This shows how digital solutions help us work more efficiently.’

assist crews

The task of the Shore Support Centre is to assist crews in carrying out their nautical and production tasks. ‘We have a live display of onboard production systems, so we’re always on top of any situation on a vessel,’ explains Maarten Loman, Plant Manager. ‘The Centre brings together professionals who have the right expertise to support crews. The entire fleet will soon be able to benefit from the knowledge that we are gaining now and documenting for the future.’

Working together, but at arm’s length – It’s not uncommon nowadays and nothing out of the ordinary for a marine contractor. The Van Oord Shore Support Centre is paving the way towards a new approach that optimises our internal processes.

Several of Van Oord’s in-house departments have been working on digital client solutions. Survey, for example, developed the VO:X Metiri, the company’s first unmanned survey vessel.

Long term goals

‘Their technical and functional requirements gave us the foundations for building the unmanned survey vessel. We’re delighted to help Van Oord improve its processes. Together, we’re building a new business case for sustainable and innovative solutions for autonomous navigation, control and system design. The knowledge and experience we’ve gained in this project will contribute to long-term goals in autonomous shipping.’

Combination of experience and knowledge

The Survey team developed the VO:X Metiri in collaboration with high-end technology supplier Demcon. ‘The key to our success lays in combining Van Oord’s experience and expertise in survey with our knowledge of autonomous technologies and system development,’ says Fedor Ester, Managing Director of Demcon Unmanned Systems. ‘From design and engineering to the execution phase, the entire vessel was developed in-house and in close cooperation with Van Oord’s engineers.’

Digitalisation can help make our work safer, more efficient and more sustainable

Floating data

The team’s aim was to obtain more data for clients at a lower cost. Thanks to its small dimensions, the VO:X Metiri can operate in places inaccessible to normal survey vessels. It also features the very latest in sustainable solutions, including zero emissions and low-noise engines, allowing the vessel to collect data without disturbing local fauna.

take small steps

‘If your goal is transportation, then start by building a scooter instead of a full-on racing car. You’ll end up with the racing car eventually, but taking it in small steps means you can evaluate and make adjustments every step of the way. Agility and close stakeholder involvement are key. Joining forces with partners also helps us gain new insights and expertise, leading to the best solution.’

Digital leaders

‘We encourage everyone at Van Oord to become digital leaders and to keep their eyes peeled for new opportunities,’ Mare continues. ‘Even the smallest steps can make a big impact in the long run. We need to embrace new ways of working and thinking. One example is to work with clients and users on short, low-risk projects that bring us closer to a solution.’

Reduce impact on planet

‘Digitalisation can help make our work safer, more efficient and more sustainable,’ says Mare Straetmans, VO:X Programme Director. ‘But the main focus of all our projects is to add value for our clients, for example by giving them better access to project information during the tender or execution phase and making that information easier to understand. That way, we both become more productive and reduce our impact on the planet.’

The world is changing. A steady stream of new technologies is impacting the way businesses operate, much the way our own lives are growing more digital by the day.

Van Oord is always on the lookout for innovative digital solutions that create value for our clients and take marine engineering to the next level.

What is digital?

Van Oord has embarked on many new partnerships with PortXL participants. This year the programme faced the challenges of the Covid-19 outbreak, but the transition to a largely digital programme went smoothly. Van Oord is proud to announce two new partnerships that will help us achieve our sustainable ambitions and reduce our fleet’s carbon footprint.

Van Oord is proud to be one of the founding partners of PortXL. We started this partnership to complement our outside-in approach to innovation, allowing us to join forces with start-up entrepreneurs and other industry leaders.
